Freehub Magazine doesn’t hand out praise lightly. So when Freehub’s Cy Whitling, a self-described skeptic of lightweight wheels, riding an aggressive enduro setup on rowdy North Carolina terrain, took the GMT 30 out for an extended test, we knew the results would speak for themselves.

The wheel had already proven itself before the review even started: a rider piloted the GMT 30 to a win at the Pisgah Enduro the day after mounting it up. Freehub wanted to see if that performance would hold up to sustained, real-world abuse.

What the Review Covered

Climbing & Acceleration
Cy found the GMT 30 felt noticeably more responsive underfoot than a comparable competitor wheelset, translating pedaling effort more directly into forward motion on climbs — a difference he attributed to both the lower weight and the hub engagement.

Descending & Stiffness
Despite the ultralight build, Cy was surprised by how composed the wheels felt at speed and in corners, holding their line without excess flex — countering the assumption that a lightweight wheel has to feel noodly or imprecise.

Ride Comfort & Vibration Damping
The carbon G-Spokes were a standout: the review highlighted the smoother, less harsh feel they deliver on rough trail compared to traditional steel-spoked wheels, without sacrificing the wheel’s overall stiffness.

Durability
Over an extended testing period across steep, technical trails, the wheelset held up without issue — staying true and requiring no more than a routine rotor bolt check after a hard landing.
